Affirming Episcopal Churches in Houston
The Episcopal Church Welcomes You!
The Episcopal Church, a Christian denomination of more than 1.5 million people and 7,000 churches around the globe, is proud to support the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Since 1976 the Episcopal Church has affirmed that queer people “are children of God who have a full and equal claim with all other persons upon the love, acceptance, and pastoral concern and care of the Church”. Openly gay people have been ordained as deacons and priests since the 1990s and as bishops since 2003. Openly transgender people have been ordained in our denomination since 2004. In many states local Episcopal Churches celebrated same-sex marriages as soon as it became legal to do so in their states. In 2015 the Episcopal Church resolved to celebrate marriages regardless of gender and sexual orientation, in the same week that the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.
In the first century, Jesus of Nazareth inspired a movement. A community of people whose lives were centered on Jesus Christ and committed to living the way of God’s unconditional, unselfish, sacrificial, and redemptive love. As Episcopalians, we believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death and resurrection saved the world.
We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being.
Leadership is a gift from God and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.
We believe that God loves us all – no exceptions.
